MOUNT SHASTA – On June 5, 2026, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced that it safely captured a young female mountain lion (F-79) in Mount Shasta. The lion got a quick health assessment prior to being driven to a remote habitat and released back into the wild.

CDFW expressed its gratitude to the local agencies that assisted with protecting the public and locating the animal.  CDFW also thanked the many Siskiyou County residents who reported the lion’s whereabouts and activities over the several days that it moved back into the Weed-Mount Shasta communities where it was born.  Previously, this lion had spent time in wildlife rehabilitation and was then released within the Trinity Alps.

Outfitted with a GPS satellite collar, CDFW will continue to monitor the lion’s movements.
