SACRAMENTO – On September 2, 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California’s enforcement efforts to keep consumers safe from illegal products have resulted in the removal of 15,300 illegal intoxicating products from store shelves.

“California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control agents are a major part of these enforcement efforts,” said California Alcoholic Beverage Control Agents (CABCA) Association President Bryant Pender.  “ABC agents have conducted more than 31,700 site visits to licensees, resulting in the removal of 7,403 illegal hemp products and 7,888 kratom and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) products.  We started this effort with education, followed by enforcement.”

Among ABC licensees, 99.33% are following the law by not selling illegal hemp products, and 97.75% are following the law by not selling deadly kratom/7-OH items.

“If a product is sold in California, people should be able to trust that it follows the law. We’ve made the rules clear, giving businesses the opportunity to comply, and we’re holding accountable those who don’t. That’s how you protect kids and consumers while standing up for responsible businesses doing things the right way,” said Newsom.
