“No seasonal lifeguard should be without a safety net of protection given their duties, which put them at risk for serious injury or death and expose them to civil and criminal liability for their actions.” – CSLEA President Alan Barcelona
California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA) Membership Services representatives spent June 25-28 visiting seasonal lifeguards reporting for summer duty and spoke with them about the importance of becoming a CSLEA member. As a result of their outreach in San Clemente, Malibu, Huntington Beach, Carlsbad and Santa Cruz, 300 California seasonal lifeguards applied for seasonal membership.
This new class of membership entitles State of California seasonal lifeguards to a $15,000 basic life insurance benefit, civil and criminal representation through the CSLEA Legal Defense Fund, and gives seasonal lifeguards the opportunity to serve as CSLEA site representatives.
“There was a lot of enthusiasm about getting involved and learning about a site representative’s responsibilities,” said CSLEA Board Member Bernadette Gonzalez. “A special thank you to the Peace Officer-Lifeguards who work year round the park rangers who assisted us in educating the seasonal lifeguards about being protected from possible negative work related issues that can arise given a lifeguard’s duties.”
“This new level of membership offers some of the basic protections that seasonal lifeguards need and many have been without,” said CSLEA President Alan Barcelona. “Seasonal lifeguards are on duty to protect, rescue and save lives. The very nature of what they do, puts them in harm’s way and opens them up to possible liabilities.”
While seasonal lifeguards are encouraged to obtain full CSLEA membership, the new Seasonal Member classification is now being offered for $50.00 per member per month.
