SAN DIEGO – On March 12, 2016, California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA) Member Services Field Representative John Knight attended the California seasonal lifeguard re-qualification and new hire test in the San Diego Coast District.
“This is a pivotal day for seasonal lifeguards,” said Knight. “Returning lifeguards and potential new lifeguards must complete a physical tryout as part of the hiring process. In very difficult conditions, the candidates are required to swim 1,000 yards in under 20 minutes, and then finish with a quarter mile beach run, a 500 yard swim, and another quarter mile run under 10 minutes. The grueling conditions and difficult challenge culled many who weren’t up to the task.”
Qualifications or tryouts are being held throughout the state.
“We have been meeting with our seasonal lifeguards, as their season begins and throughout the summer months helping to familiarize them with their CSLEA affiliate association, the California Association of Law Enforcement Employees (CALEE) and getting their assistance and feedback for bargaining,” said CSLEA President Alan Barcelona. “The sheer nature of their job puts them at risk for injury, life threatening situations, and the need for access to legal defense. We make a concerted effort to make them aware of our CSLEA seasonal membership, so they are protected.”
