OXNARD – California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA) site representatives attended a motivational class on March 9, 2019 instructed by CSLEA site rep stars CHP-PSDA Directors Alana Haddock and DeVon Young and CSLEA Senior Vice President Tina Brazil.
Haddock and Young opened the class by asking all site representatives to stand. “On your feet,” said Young. “You guys are rock stars! You guys are the voice of union. All of us are the boots on the ground for CSLEA and those we represent.”
Class attendees discussed scenarios that site representatives are called upon to resolve.
“You have to have to set aside your subordinate role as an employee and adopt leadership skills as a site rep,” said Haddock.
Site reps were encouraged to be everything to their coworkers, present concerns to management, know the contract, be available, be involved, and to ask management to be a part of staff meetings.
“As a site rep sometimes you are in a position where the employee you represent is in the wrong and you have to side with management, that is hard,” said Brazil. “You properly represent the employee and make sure the employee is being treated fairly, but if the employee is wrong, it’s your job to let the employee know this.”
