SACRAMENTO – Awesome work, students! You did your part by compiling the paperwork, writing an essay and filling out the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA) scholarship application and got it postmarked by the deadline of May 24, 2019! Now it’s time for CSLEA staff and the CSLEA Scholarship Review Committee to roll up their sleeves and score the scholarship packets of each of the approximately 40 applicants who are keeping their fingers crossed for a $1,000 award.
“We expect that we will receive several more applications that are postmarked May 24th but have not yet arrived at CSLEA headquarters,” said CSLEA President Alan Barcelona. “All of the applications are given a number. A CSLEA staff member then copies the application packets, redacts any identifying information and passes the packets over to the CSLEA Scholarship Review Committee.”
The review committee consists of CSLEA directors who volunteer their time to score the individual packets. Once the committee members return their scored packets, a CSLEA staff member tallies the scores, the top eight applicants are identified, and each is awarded $1,000. These scholarships are made possible due to generous donations to the CSLEA Foundation.
“There is no question the work for us has just begun,” said Barcelona. “But we recognize the importance of it, and continually stand in awe of the young people our members are raising and guiding through life.”
The CSLEA scholarship review committee will announce the names of the scholarship recipients by August 23, 2109.
