CALAVERAS COUNTY – On March 29, 2021, at about 11:50 AM, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center received a call from a person who stated they had located what they believed to be human remains on a seldom used portion of their property in a remote area located north of San Andreas.
Patrol deputies and investigators responded to the location and confirmed the remains to be human. The scene was investigated and processed over the course of several days by investigative and forensic personnel including:
- Detectives from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office,
- Investigators from the District Attorney’s Office,
- Forensic Analysts from the California Department of Justice,
- a Forensic Anthropologist,
- and three specialized K9 resources.
“Processing a scene in which a body has been discovered can take much time and must be very thorough,” said California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA) President Alan Barcelona. “Counties that call upon the California Department of Justice to assist with potential crime scenes and evidence are getting the very best.”
According to the sheriff’s department, evidence at the scene indicated that the remains are not part of a historic Native American burial site. Identification of the subject along with the circumstances and manner of death is under current investigation.
