2023 Legislature
On April 10th, the Legislature returned back from Spring Recess in earnest. Quickly going right into policy committees all week. Well over a thousand bills will be heard in the coming weeks, moving through the legislative process. At the same time, the legislature is hearing from the administration and all of the executive agencies regarding budgetary items. We anticipate the Governor will be releasing his May Revise in the coming weeks. The State budget will continue to get negotiated for the coming months.
Of particular note for Public Safety, AB 742 (Jackson) the prohibition on the use of police k-9’s is awaiting its fate in the Assembly Appropriations committee. If the bill moves from Appropriations it will then go to the Assembly Floor, where we will continue to oppose and hope to successfully stop it. Next is AB 740 (Gabriel) which would ban the use of drones using DJI technology in the State of California. This bill would have a large wide sweeping impact on public safety, grounding most drone fleets in the State. This bill will be heard in Assembly Accountability and Administrative Review Committee on 4/19. We are opposed. We will continue to keep you updated.
