MONTEREY COUNTY – On May 9, 2025, at about 4:40 p.m., Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies received a call of a possible armed robbery at a Wells Fargo Bank in Carmel. It was reported that multiple suspects, believed to be armed with handguns, entered the bank. The suspects were last seen fleeing the area in a red vehicle with an undisclosed amount of money. The first deputy arrived within minutes and located a suspicious vehicle matching the description. The vehicle was determined to be unoccupied.
Reports were received of suspicious people running towards Carmel Middle School. As a precaution, the campus was directed to go into secured campus procedures. With the assistance of Carmel, Salinas and Seaside police departments, California State Parks, and the California Highway Patrol, an extensive search was conducted at the mouth of Carmel Valley, the Carmel Riverbed and areas in and around the Wells Fargo Bank and Carmel Middle School. The suspects were not located at the time and the investigation continues.
One bank customer sustained minor injuries during this incident and was treated at the scene.
“California State Park rangers are a valuable asset to their local law enforcement partners in responding to crimes and searching for suspects. We thank them and all the responding officers for their dedication to public safety,” said California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA) President Alan Barcelona.
