BAKERSFIELD – On May 20, 2025, the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) announced the results of a two-day undercover sting operation it conducted in Bakersfield on April 24–25. During the operation, 10 people received notices to appear in court for alleged unlicensed contracting.

The operation was led by CSLB’s Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT) with support from the California Department of Insurance and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. Suspects submitted bids between $1,600 and $4,800 for home improvement work including plumbing, concrete, painting, and landscaping jobs – well above the $1,000 amount requiring licensure.

Several individuals also are accused of violating state laws by asking for excessive down payments and advertising services without a valid license. California law limits down payments to 10 percent of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less, and requires license numbers to appear on all business materials. Unlicensed individuals may only advertise for jobs under $1,000 and must state they are not licensed.

Five stop orders were issued for failure to provide workers’ compensation insurance for employees.
