We consider ourselves one of the most diverse and distinctive law enforcement associations in the country.
We make that statement based on this indisputable fact: No other group of public-employed professionals do as many varied public safety and consumer protection jobs for the people they serve — in our case, the people of California — than the men and women of the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association.
Our membership consists of California state workers who are:
Special Agents with the Department of Justice – California’s strong force in the war on terror, transnational gangs, drugs, border security, unlawful possession of firearms, cyber crime, illegal gambling and elder abuse.
Alcoholic Beverage Control Agents who go after armed & dangerous felons and gangs, conduct gambling & narcotics investigations, keep alcohol out of the hands of minors, and track down where drinking minors involved in major incidents obtained their alcohol.
Fish and Wildlife Wardens and State Park Rangers who guard California’s natural resources and protect those who visit.
Firefighters and Deputy State Fire Marshals who protect California’s most valuable public possessions and keep safe our buildings and the events we attend.
Hospital police officers who protect the community, visitors, staff and patients at and near California state hospitals.
Investigators who root out identity theft, disabled placard abuse, insurance, unemployment, disability retirement and lottery scams, tax fraud, crooked employers, dangerous doctors, unlicensed contractors, faulty medical device suppliers, unhygienic food manufacturers and more.
Inspectors who see that auto repair shops are honest, salons are clean, milk producers and gas station operators don’t short-change their customers, and travelers aren’t bringing into our state, harmful plants, pets or illegal material.
911 dispatchers who are on the receiving end of 90 percent of California’s emergency calls.

CSLEA members are also on the front lines of vehicle safety:
- making sure students and teachers don’t speed through drivers’ education classes
- keeping the worst drivers from ever getting a license
- investigating the most grisly accidents
- inspecting the tour and school busses transporting our loved ones
More still…
CSLEA has real-life CSIs! Our Criminalists with the California Department of Justice make cold-case hits from DNA evidence to track down killers who thought they had gotten away with murder. Their science speaks for the evidence, leading to the conviction of the guilty and acquittal of the innocent.
CSLEA members also:
- put child molesters and sex offenders behind bars.
- save swimmers from drowning.
- find lost hikers.
- investigate arsons and bombings.
- and prevent oil spills in our waterways.
And when it really hits the fan, our members with the California Office of Emergency Services direct multi-agency responses to mass disasters of every kind.
Helping to prevent fires and floods and fighting flames and floodwater when they do occur, are our Conservationists with the California Conservations Corps. Conservationists train CCC members how to create and maintain trails and keep nature at its best.
Here are two other important jobs our CSLEA investigators do: Save the taxpayers billions from waste, fraud, and abuse and protect the integrity of the State of California itself.
Our members have skills and knowledge no other law enforcement officials at local, county, and federal levels possess, which is why they are frequently called upon to lead and participate in multi-agency task forces.
CSLEA’s 7,000 members can be found in 110 different job classifications in state government. The California Union of Safety Employees (CAUSE) was the former name of the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA). When the Dills Act put all state employees into various bargaining units, CAUSE was elected in 1981 to represent the Unit 7 state employees of what is now CSLEA.
