To say Dwaylon Calhoun is a dedicated public safety and protection professional just might be an understatement.
Mr. Calhoun has dedicated nearly his entire life to serving his country and the state of California.
As an Inspector II for the Dental Board of California, Mr. Calhoun makes it his business to root out fraud and unsanitary conditions in dental facilities throughout the state. Mr. Calhoun conducts on site inspections based referrals of reported safety and sanitary violations. If there is any question about unsafe practices, Mr. Calhoun is there to check it out. No one wants a dental assistant doing the work of a registered dental hygienist or even the dentist, and if that’s happening, Mr. Calhoun is there to put a stop to it.
Another job that Mr. Calhoun worked in the Dental Board of California was that of an Investigator. Investigators are peace officers and have the authority to pursue criminal and administrative violations of the law. Some of the complaints that Mr. Calhoun investigated included, fraud, health and safety violations, unprofessional conduct, and unlicensed practice.
“Consumer protection is important to our health and well being,” said Mr. Calhoun. “With my knowledge and expertise, I protect the health and safety of consumers who may not even know they’re in harm’s way.”
Mr. Calhoun started his career with the state after 15 years of service with both the United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guard as well as a stint with U.S. Immigration and Customs (ICE). Mr. Calhoun worked in the Deportation Service Processing Center in San Pedro, California for two years before going to work for the State of California.
Beginning his career with the state of California as a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist at the Employment Development Department, Mr. Calhoun helped veterans injured in war to find fulfilling jobs and careers to enhance their lives. Mr. Calhoun also assisted his veterans’ clients with counseling and other services such as housing resources and job training.
“This position was close to my heart,” said Mr. Calhoun. “Because I, too, am a disabled veteran.”
Mr. Calhoun then joined the Alcoholic Beverage Control as a Licensing Representative II. As A Licensing Representative II, Mr. Calhoun’s duties were to explain provisions of the laws, rules, and regulations of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act; contact and interview individuals and representatives of business or governmental organizations; locate and interview protestants and analyze and evaluate their testimony and perform other related tasks.
In addition to his consumer protection duties as a dental Inspector, Mr. Calhoun serves as a board member for the California Association of Regulatory Investigators & Inspectors (CARII).
“I am proud to be a servant first to the nation, then to the state, and now to the union,” said Mr. Calhoun. “Anything that I can do for the people in the dental industry. As an Inspector for the Dental Board of California, I have an opportunity to teach compliance and not just punish for lack thereof. As one of only two Dental Board of California inspectors in the entire state it is my job to protect the workers in the Dental industry as well as the patients.”
