ISLA VISTA – Agents of the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) along with other local law enforcement officials patrolled the Deltopia event on the weekend of April 7-9, 2023, to increase public safety. Deltopia takes place every year around spring break and attracts UC Santa Barbara students and hundreds of out-of-town visitors.
During the event, ABC agents, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other law enforcement partners issued 151 citations and made 23 arrests. SBSO reports the crowds were largest on Saturday and significantly higher than last year’s event.
ABC agents conducted compliance checks, educated clerks and servers and worked to ensure alcohol was not being served to those under 21 or those who had too much to drink.
ABC agents also conducted shoulder tap operations which focus on adults who purchase alcohol for people under 21.
“The idea behind the increased presence of ABC agents at these types of events and venues is not to spoil the fun, but to keep everyone safe,” said California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA) President Alan Barcelona. “These officers are often away from their families when assisting local law enforcement during these events and we thank them for their service.”
