“Out of 30 retailers approached during the operation, only one clerk at one retailer sold to the underaged individual. We appreciate the work that ABC agents and their local law enforcement partners do to combat underage drinking and to prevent the dangerous situations that underage drinkers can pose to members of the community.” -CSLEA President Alan Barcelona
SAN LUIS OBISPO – On, June 29, 2023, California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control agents and San Luis Obispo Police officers conducted a Minor Decoy Operation that focused on alcohol sales to people under 21. From noon until 8:00 p.m., a decoy under the age of 21 and under the direct supervision of law enforcement entered grocery, liquor, and convenience stores and attempted to purchase alcohol. The decoy was truthful about his/her age when asked and presented his/her actual identification if requested.
Of the 30 retailers approached during the operation, one retailer, Sprouts Farmers Market, sold alcohol to the minor decoy. The suspect was cited for the violation and released on scene.
Minor Decoy operations are proven to be an effective tool in promoting responsible practices in the sales of alcoholic beverages by licensees, reducing substance abuse and enhancing community welfare by limiting underage access to alcohol.
“Underage drinking harms our community. Preventing the sale of alcohol to minors will help to increase public safety and make our roads safer,” said SLOPD Sergeant Joe Hurni.
