SAN LUIS OBISPO – On March 16, 2024 at 3:30 a.m., the San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) began receiving disturbance calls as parties related to the St. Patrick’s Day holiday commenced in various neighborhoods near the Cal Poly campus. SLOPD had mobilized a maximum deployment of personnel in an effort to proactively address disturbances.
As disturbances escalated, SLOPD and its allied agencies began issuing citations for various infractions including noise violations, unruly gatherings, open container violations, public urination, and public intoxication.
Approximately, six thousand to seven thousand individuals congregated in the streets adjacent to the Cal Poly campus. In the interest of public safety, at approximately 6:00 a.m., SLOPD made the decision to close off streets surrounding Hathaway and Bond due to the large gatherings.
Throughout the morning, SLOPD and its law enforcement partners continued efforts to maintain order, resulting in a large number of citations and arrests. Despite the challenges posed by the celebrations, there were no major incidents reported within the city, although there was damage to several cars in the neighborhoods.
Mutual aid support was provided by various law enforcement agencies including the:
- Cal Poly Police Department,
- Cal State Police,
- California Men’s Colony,
- and California Alcohol Beverage Control.
SLOPD expects to provide additional information on the number of arrests and citations issued in the coming days.
